Service Saturday
Nourishing the Land, Restoring our Souls
@ Native Prairie Bison, Ames
“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.”
Saturday, October 18
9:00-1:00
Let's work together and do something meaningful.
Spend a morning giving care to the land, meeting new friends, and honoring values of conservation, gratitude, appreciation and community. We will gather at Native Prairie Bison to celebrate the earth by contributing our time, energy, intentions and aspirations for the earth and our souls to be strengthened. Oh, and let’s not forget to strengthen our bodies and our sense of fellowship by sharing a pot luck meal together!
Here’s our plan for the day
9:00 Introductions, sharing intentions, aspirations, visions, gratitudes
9:40 Education about Native Prairie and the oak savanna ecotone
10:00 Offering our time and energy to the land- getting our hands dirty together in service to the Earth
12:20 Pot luck lunch – Nourishing our bodies and hearts by breaking bread together
Here’s more info about the day
Our work will support the restoration of an oak savannah ecotone between restored prairie and woodland habitats.
Work will involve weeding, lopping branches, hauling debris, clearing scrap and trash off the ground, and other manual tasks.
Bring work gloves and work clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
If you’d like, bring something to share for a pot luck lunch. Bringing food is not a requirement stay for lunch. Your presence is sufficient!
This is a family friendly event! Bring your kids, parents, etc. We ask that you leave your furry family members at home.
Meet Your Hosts

Brooks Witter, LMHC
Brooks is a psychotherapist by trade, a budding naturalist, a nature lover, primitive skills appreciator, and a recovering intellectual. Getting people outdoors to open up to the wonder that is abundantly available when we open our senses is one of his favorite things to do.

Jathan Chicoine
Jathan is from Central Iowa and is a Veteran of the U.S. Navy. Following military service, Jathan Chicoine continued to fill a need to be part of something larger than himself. He currently works in Veterans affairs. While not at his day job, you’ll find Jathan at his farm where he is developing diverse ecosystems by restoring native prairie, oak savanna, and other native habitats through the help and management of a bison family herd.
